7. Int. Colloquium der DOGThe important role of the temple in ancient Near Eastern cultures is universally acknowledged, but in recent years there has been no general overview of the topic. It has been more than 35 years since it was the theme of the Rencontre Assyriologique International and a new look at the subject is due. Temples were a vital component of these cultures, as they constituted not only religious buildings, in which the cults of the gods were celebrated, but also fulfilled other functions forming the centre of the city both architecturally and socially. In the course of the centuries the forms and functions of temples changed, and at the same time regional differences may be observed. They exercised great economic power and played an important role politically and ideologically closely connected with the royal builders and benefactors.

The Munich colloquium will assess current knowledge about temples in the ancient Near East and also address contemporary research questions. The main focus of the meeting will be Mesopotamian civilisation in the time of the cuneiform era but its prehistoric roots and the cultures of adjacent regions (Anatolia, Syria and Iran) will also be discussed.

The contributions will present a synthesis of recent research and investigate specific aspects of the roles of temples on the basis of concrete examples designed to illustrate the more general themes.
